You can use a variety of acceptable documents to prove a business ownership change, including:
Ownership Certificates
- Articles of Incorporation or Amendment
- Statement of Information
- Schedule K-1 and Form 1065
- Tax records
- Notice of ownership change
- Resolutions, minutes, or other official records
Ownership certificates
Businesses issue certificates to shareholders, members or partners to show proof of ownership. Acceptable types of certificates vary based on the business structure:
- Corporations: Corporate-issued stock certificates
- LLCs: Membership certificates
- LPs and LLPs: Partnership certificates.
- Articles of Incorporation or Amendment
These can be filed with the state's business registration agency to notify of changes to membership.

How to Update Your Business Ownership With the State
To update your information official ownership records, you can submit a request to the Secretary of State. You will need to file your amended Articles of Incorporation or Articles of Amendment along with any other documents to reflect the updated ownership.
